The Gonstead Concept of chiropractic is based on a basic biomechanical principle of physics: A proper foundation is necessary to ensure durability, stability and long life. Any deviation in the foundation may cause a great amount of deviation in the top part of the structure, ultimately carrying the potential of its collapse.
In the human body, the foundation is formed by the pelvic girdle. When properly aligned, there will be maximum balance and stability in the spinal column. Any misalignment in the pelvis or the spine may cause far-reaching changes to occur in the body by putting unequal pressure on the spinal discs and causing them to swell and protrude. These abnormal changes may pinch or compress, irritate and/or inflame spinal nerves. These changes may, in turn, impede a nerve’s transmission of signals and cause the body to compensate for the misalignment elsewhere to keep the skeleton upright and straight. If unable to compensate completely, the body may start to show symptoms.
One can say: The tilted or rotated vertebrae may sooner or later lead to a reduction in the body’s own healing capacity, thus resulting in symptoms.
A Gonstead Chiropractor focuses on finding the primary cause of misalignment to the body. By re-establishing the normal position of the spine, the nerve transmits its signals correctly, thus facilitating the body’s self-regulating forces and alleviating symptoms.
The Gonstead Adjustment – What is special about it?
The adjustment follows a complete history and spinal analysis including
(1) Examination of the spine,
(2) Instrumentation analysis,
(3) Static and motion palpating analysis.
The necessary adjustments are aimed to address the problem area and restore optimal health by correcting the aforementioned interference to the nervous system. The aim is to be as specific, precise and accurate as possible. To achieve this, the Gonstead System takes great care to deliver any adjustment in a bio-mechanically correct direction. This precision will provide accurate and comfortable adjustments.
In the words of Clarence S. Gonstead: “Find the subluxation, accept it where you find it, correct it and leave it alone.”
